The Simple Website Checklist Every Service Business Needs

No jargon, no tools to install — just the practical checklist we'd run your own website against before anything else.

Rolled-up blueprints next to a coffee on a desk

This is the checklist we’d actually run a service-business website against — not a list of fifty technical things that don’t matter to a homeowner deciding whether to call. Go through it on your own site, on your own phone, and be honest about each one.

The first screen

  • Within one screen, can a stranger tell what you do and where you cover?
  • Is your phone number visible and tappable without scrolling?
  • Is there one obvious thing to do next (call, message, get a quote)?

Trust, fast

  • Is there a real photo of the team, the van, or the work — not generic stock imagery?
  • Are there genuine reviews, or a link to where they can be checked?
  • Does the site look current — no outdated copyright dates, no broken layout on mobile?

Every page, not just the homepage

  • Does every service page repeat the call-to-action, not just the homepage?
  • Is it clear which areas/towns you cover, stated plainly?
  • Are your services described in terms the customer understands, not internal trade jargon?

Speed and mobile

  • Does the site load quickly on mobile data, not just home wifi?
  • Is text large enough to read without zooming?
  • Are buttons big enough to tap accurately with a thumb?

Findability

  • Does the site actually mention the towns and services you want to be found for?
  • Is there a Google Business Profile linked and consistent with the website?
  • If you have a blog or guides section, does it link back to the relevant service page?

The honest follow-up question

Once you’ve gone through it: how many boxes are ticked, and — more importantly — which unticked box is most likely costing you a call this week? It’s rarely the most technical one. It’s usually something plain, like a phone number that’s two scrolls down, or a site that hasn’t been touched since it was first built.

This checklist is deliberately simple because the things that actually move enquiries usually are. If you want us to run through it for you and tell you what we’d fix first, that’s exactly what’s in the free growth plan.
